About LankaTextTools

LankaTextTools is an independent collection of browser-based text utilities for people who work with Sinhala and Tamil Unicode, legacy fonts and phonetic typing.

Why this site exists

Sri Lankan text workflows still span modern Unicode and older font encodings. A document can look correct on one computer and break when copied elsewhere because the visible glyphs depend on a legacy font. People also need quick ways to type Sinhala or Tamil when a native keyboard is not configured.

LankaTextTools brings these practical tasks into focused web tools. Each page is built around one clear text problem instead of hiding converters inside a large generic utility site.

What we prioritize

We prioritize useful output, clear terminology and predictable browser behavior. A converter should explain whether it is changing an encoding, transliterating phonetic input, normalizing Unicode or simply counting characters. Those are different operations and the site treats them as different operations.

  • Tools should work without creating an account.
  • Text processing should run in the browser where practical.
  • Legacy mappings should be identified by source font instead of pretending every old Sinhala font uses one encoding.
  • Important limitations should be visible near the tool and in the methodology.
  • New tools should be published only when they add a distinct user workflow.

Sinhala first, with a wider Sri Lankan text scope

The launch focuses on Sinhala Unicode, FM Abhaya conversion and Singlish typing because those workflows have strong practical demand. The LankaTextTools brand is deliberately broader so tested Tamil tools and other Sri Lankan text utilities can live in the same coherent system.

Independence and third-party standards

LankaTextTools is not the University of Colombo, Microsoft, a font vendor or a government service. References to Unicode, fonts and legacy formats describe interoperability standards and text workflows. Where conversion logic is based on open-source work, the repository includes the relevant license and attribution information.
